Dear visitor,

Welcome to the website of the Mission of Georgia to NATO.

Our intent is to better present our country as well as the activities of the Mission.

Georgia strives to become a member of NATO. This aspiration lies on the very top of the priority list of the Georgian foreign policy. The Alliance is based on the values of freedom and democracy. Georgia fully shares these values and stands ready to defend them.

At the same time, Georgia considers NATO as the only organization of collective defence in Euro-Atlantic area that provides security to its Member States and is capable of addressing existing threats and challenges.

Georgia’s aspiration to NATO membership is based on the consensus of entire political spectrum of the country and is supported by over 80% of Georgia’s population.

Since the accession to NATO Partnership for Peace Programme in 1994, Georgia has proved to be a reliable partner to the Alliance. Georgia is already a security provider as it is actively contributing to international security. Georgian military servants are currently participating in peace and stabilization operations in Kosovo and Iraq. Besides, Georgia will resume its participation in International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan in the nearest future. At the same time, the consultations with the Alliance on Georgia’s support to the Operation Active Endeavour are close to completion.

Since the Rose Revolution, Georgia has shown its commitment to remain faithful to the values of freedom and democracy. Our country has embarked irreversibly on the road of democratic transformation. The Government has launched an intensive and large-scale programme of structural reforms in nearly all spheres of public sector.

During this period, country’s performance has been impressive. The Government has delivered tangible results in various spheres, including defence and security, economy, education and judiciary.

Today Georgia ranks as one of the least corrupted countries in Eastern Europe and from a miserable economy Georgia has become one of the leading reformist countries among transition economies.

Nevertheless Georgia realises that there still remain challenges and additional performance is necessary to address them. Frozen conflicts still represent challenge to stable development of the country. Georgia is committed to a peaceful conflict resolution policy and proposes peaceful initiatives.  More active involvement of international community for finding a political solution to these problems is of significant importance.

Georgia was the first Partner state that launched an Individual Partnership Action Plan with NATO in 2004. The IPAP has provided an overarching framework of cooperation between Georgia and NATO. It has proved to be an effective instrument in conducting reforms in the fields of policy, security, defence, public information, science, environmental protection, crisis management and administration.

Transition to the Intensified Dialogue (ID) format on membership issues in 2006 has enabled Georgia to have more frequent consultations and obtain permanent evaluation from NATO on key issues related to the reforms and NATO integration issues.

Georgia understands fully that integration into NATO is a performance based process and spares no effort for timely accomplishment of reforms scheduled in IPAP. We hope that progress achieved in reforms and political consultations in the ID format will prepare the bases for the next stage of integration – Membership Action Plan.

I hope this website will help you find proper information on our country as well as get acquainted with the work of Mission. We encourage you to visit us regularly. Your questions and comments will be highly appreciated.
